Love INC, a nonprofit that helps churches band together to assist impoverished people, is closing its national headquarters in Minneapolis indefinitely because of insufficient funds. The last day of operation will be this Friday.

Love INC President Robert Odom said Thursday it's possible the headquarters could reopen in the future. Its national board of directors will continue to meet to keep the "national headquarters legal structure intact and to determine next steps."

The board will be looking at "all options and ramifications in the weeks to come," Odom said. He blames the poor economy for the nonprofit's woes and said, "there were some financial commitments (from donors) that weren't fulfilled."

The nonprofit is instrumental in helping churches of various denominations mobilize to assist people whose needs often fall between the cracks of county and state aid. Love INC's work focuses on six key areas that impact people in need: Food, clothing, shelter, health care, life skills and family support services.

Love INC (which stands for Love In the Name of Christ) has over 150 affiliates in 30 states, representing a network of more than 9,000 churches, 7,000 community agencies and nearly 300,000 volunteers, according to its website. There are eight Love INC affiliates in Minnesota.

All Love INC affiliates are separate nonprofit organizations and will carry on with the Love INC mission and ministry in their local communities. Odom said staff members at Love INC's headquarters helped train new affiliate members and assisted in establishing new affiliates, but will be turning over those duties to other selected affiliates.

Love INC, which was founded in 1977, has had its headquarters in Minneapolis since 2001.
