Arizona mom booked in death of children
Two children found dead in a Southern California hotel room after their suicidal mother crashed her car outside a shopping complex were a 13-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, police said. The children's mother, Marilyn Edge, 42, of Scottsdale, Ariz., was arrested Saturday and booked on suspicion of murder in the deaths, Santa Ana police said. She was expected in court Tuesday for an arraignment hearing. The children's father lives out-of-state and was not notified of their deaths until Sunday.

Bombings kill 58 in south and central Iraq
A wave of car bombings and other attacks in Iraq killed at least 58 people in mostly Shiite-majority cities, another bloody reminder of the government's failure to stem the surge of violence that is feeding sectarian tensions. Iraq is experiencing its deadliest bout of violence since 2008. More than 4,000 people have been killed in attacks since the start of April, including 804 just in August, according to U.N. figures. Sunday's deadliest attack was in the city of Hillah, 60 miles south of Baghdad, where a car bomb near an outdoor market killed nine civilians and wounded 15 others, police said. A few minutes later, another car bomb went off nearby, killing six civilians and wounding 14.

Nuclear-capable missile passes second test
India on Sunday successfully test-fired for the second time a nuclear-capable missile that can strike the major Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai, officials said. Ravi Gupta, a spokesman for the Defence Research and Development Organisation, said the latest test of the Agni-V brought the missile a step closer to being inducted into India's arsenal at some point in 2014 or 2015. The missile was launched early Sunday morning from Wheeler Island off India's east coast.The missile has a range of 3,100 miles and was first successfully tested in April last year. It's seen as a boost to India's efforts to counter China's regional dominance and become an Asian power in its own right.

15 dead from tropical storm, hurricane
Tropical Storm Manuel edged onto Mexico's Pacific coast while Hurricane Ingrid swirled offshore on the other side of the country, as heavy rains and landslides caused at least 15 deaths and led authorities to evacuate thousands. Stormy conditions led some communities in affected states to cancel Independence Day celebrations planned for Sunday and Monday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Manuel began to weaken as soon as it made landfall near the port of Manzanillo during the afternoon, but remained a threat to produce flash floods and mudslides. It was predicted to dissipate by Monday. In the southern coastal state of Guerrero, six people died when their SUV went out of control on a rain-swept highway headed for the tourist resort of Acapulco.
