Britain

May presents her Brexit Plan B

Prime Minister Theresa May unveiled her Brexit Plan B on Monday — and it looks a lot like Plan A. May is attempting to resuscitate her rejected European Union divorce deal, setting out plans to get it approved by Parliament after securing changes from the E.U. to a contentious Irish border measure. May's opponents expressed incredulity: British lawmakers last week dealt the deal a resounding defeat, and E.U. leaders insist they won't renegotiate it. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn accused May of being in "deep denial."

Russia

Tankers catch fire in Black Sea, killing 14

Two Tanzanian-flagged commercial vessels caught fire in the Black Sea, leaving at least 14 sailors dead, Russian officials said Monday. Five other sailors were missing. The fire erupted while fuel was being pumped from one tanker to another, and the blaze then spread from one ship to the other, prompting the crews to jump overboard, according to Russian news agencies. The federal maritime agency said that combined, the two vessels had 31 crew members who are citizens of Turkey and India.

Canada

Experts call on China to release Canadians

More than 100 academics and former diplomats are calling on China to release two Canadians who have been detained in apparent retaliation for the arrest of a top Chinese tech executive in Canada. The letter by a wide array of China experts from around the world is addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping. It says the arrests of the two Canadians sends a worrisome signal to those who work in policy and research in China. China detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor on Dec. 10 in an apparent attempt to pressure Canada to release Chinese executive Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested Dec. 1 at the request of U.S. authorities.

Nevada

Man in U.S. illegally faces 4 murder charges

Authorities investigating four recent Nevada killings say murder charges are pending against a man suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. Wilbur Martinez-Guzman, 20, was arrested Saturday in Carson City and is being held on possession of stolen property, burglary and immigration charges. The murder charges stem from the shooting deaths of an elderly Reno couple and two women who lived near the town of Gardnerville.
