A teenager driving on an icy northern Minnesota highway Tuesday morning slid into the other lane and was killed in a head-on crash with an Itasca County sheriff's deputy in his patrol vehicle.

The collision occurred about 7:45 a.m. on Hwy. 169 at County Road 69 in Greenway Township, according to the State Patrol.

Sierra R. Matthews, 16, of nearby Pengilly, was killed in the wreck, the patrol said. The sheriff's deputy, Cory M. Rondeau, 32, of Grand Rapids, was not hurt.

The sheriff's deputy was responding to a medical call and had his emergency lights flashing on his vehicle when Matthews, a junior at Greenway High School, lost control of her car while heading west on snowy and icy Hwy. 169, and crossed into the deputy's path, the patrol said.

Greenway Principal Jeff Britten said in a note to students' families that pupils were told of Matthews' death during fifth hour Tuesday afternoon.

Britten added that the school's athletic events scheduled for Tuesday night have been called off.
