A late-night argument in a north Minneapolis home ended with a longtime criminal pulling a gun from his waistband and shooting his adversary in the back and face with a burst of gunfire, according to charges filed Tuesday.

Chris Scott, 39, of Minneapolis, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree murder and a gun possession count in connection with the killing of Travis Washington.

Scott, who was arrested Sunday, remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail ahead of a court appearance Wednesday. The criminal complaint noted a man fled the home with Scott as Washington lay bleeding on the dining room floor. Police have announced no other arrests.

Scott, who also has gone by the name Marcell Scott, has been convicted of various crimes over the years including assault, receiving stolen property and possession of illegal drugs, court records show. An assault conviction in 2001 made it illegal for him to possess a firearm or ammunition.

Washington was the brother of Kirk Washington, an activist and a poet who died in a car crash in April on Interstate 94 near the Minneapolis-St. Paul border.
