A community meeting has been set for Tuesday night on the planned relocation of a resurgent St. Paul school from the downtown to the city's West Side.

West Side residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and offer input about the move of Open World Learning Community (OWL) to the former home of Humboldt Middle School.

The meeting is being co-hosted by the school district and a new community group, West Siders for Strong Schools, and is expected to run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Humboldt Secondary School,

In 1971, OWL made history in a previous incarnation as the district's first magnet school. Now, after a forced restructuring, the school has a new focus on expeditionary learning, and has thrived at a two-school site at 65 E. Kellogg Blvd. downtown.

The school board voted on Oct. 15 to relocate OWL after district administrators determined the Kellogg site was too small to accommodate both OWL and Creative Arts High School, which also serves students in grades six-12. Creative Arts is centered on the literary, visual and performing arts.

"The decision was made to move Open World instead of Creative Arts because it's important to keep our performing arts school near downtown arts, dancing and music venues," the district wrote in a Q&A published later on its website. The Q&A also takes note of the planned $4 million renovation of the Humboldt site. For more about the move, go to:
