Having the New York Dolls along for the ride proved to be a crucial part of the show, I think. I feared that David Johansen & Co. would get lost in the half-empty arena in front of other people's fans, but they still filled the room mightily and had a little extra spark with Earl Slick on guitar. Meanwhile, that extra third band on the lineup forced the Crüe and Poison to tighten their sets -- which made them both a better band.

The key to Poison's sets are the big singalongs, and this show was nothing but that, since the band only played its hits (plus Grand Funk Railroad's hit). And the key to a Crüe set, in my opinion, is keeping Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx from talking too much, and keeping Vince Neil from getting too winded. Vince had plenty of chances to catch his breath in this case, with the solos still being in the set -- plus just a little banter from Nikki and Tommy -- so it was actually the singer's best showing in years and maybe decades.
