ST. PAUL, Minn. â Yet another week of wet weather has prevented Minnesota farmers from getting their planting done.
The weekly crops and weather report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture says only 2.6 days were rated suitable for fieldwork last week.
So corn planting advanced only 3 percentage points to 90 percent complete, remaining behind the five-year average of 99 percent for this date. Because of the long delay, some farmers are now expected to file insurance claims for "prevented planting" rather than plant a corn crop this year.
Despite the wet conditions, though, soybean planting advanced 17 points to 72 percent planted, which is still behind the 95-percent average for this date.
Crop development continues to lag the normal pace because of the cold wet spring, and that could affect yields.
