Quam's comeback quest

Mounds Park Academy senior Erin Quam is back from open-heart surgery last fall to correct a newly discovered artery problem that, if left unchecked, could be fatal. Though still recovering from major surgery, Quam returned to Nordic skiing — just another example of her resiliency.

Laps at Mayo: Recovering at the Mayo Clinic "was very hard to watch but she never complained," said her mother, Anne. "She would get up and do her lap around the intensive care unit and I know she had zero interest in doing it."

Coach's aide: Quam started the season doing minimal workouts but helped teammates in a coaching role. "She could demonstrate the drills and get kids going," coach Jerry Slater said. "We were just glad to have her around."

Three on skis: Quam's younger sisters, Ellie (10th grade) and Izzy (eighth), also ski for the Panthers.
