More drama for Broadway's 'Spider-Man'

Creative force and ex-show director Julie Taymor has filed a lawsuit against the producers

Julie Taymor, the visionary theater director who was dismissed earlier this year from the helm of "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark," which, at $75 million, is the most expensive Broadway musical ever, has filed a lawsuit against the producers of the show.

The suit seeks damages for royalties but has a potentially bigger impact.

The Hollywood Reporter has one of the smartest takes on the implication of the lawsuit. The biggest pot of money from Broadway shows comes not from grosses in New York, but from licensing, said reporter Eriq Gardner. The lawsuit seeks to scuttle those, he said.

He drew comparisons with "The Lion King," which cost $25 million to produce in 1997 and has grossed over $4 billion worldwide.
