• The legendary stand mixer was introduced for the home in 1919 after an executive's wife called it "the best kitchen aid."

• In 1955, KitchenAid unveiled mixers in colors such as Petal Pink, Sunny Yellow and Island Green. There are now nearly 50 colors and finishes available.

• Julia Child's KitchenAid mixer is on display (along with her kitchen) at the Smithsonian Institution. The appliance also was a staple on the set of "Friends."

• In the early years, retailers were slow to take on the KitchenAid mixer. To counter their reluctance, a direct sales force made up primarily of women went door-to-door offering demonstrations.

• The first 5-quart countertop KitchenAid mixers cost $189.50, or about $2,400 in 2011 dollars. Today's popular 5-quart Artisan model retails for $350.
