Excessive drinking played a large part in the death of a Monticello man who was found in the Mississippi River in Otsego a week after he was last seen leaving a bar, authorities said Monday.

Joseph Brunn, 23, died of an apparent drowning, and "alcohol intoxication" was listed as a significant condition, according to the Midwest medical examiner's office.

Brunn was last seen Oct. 3 walking from the Boondox Bar and Grille and near the Otsego Holiday Inn, at 9200 Quaday Av. NE.

His body was found a week later by volunteers searching near the Mississippi River at Waterfront Park and Trails in Otsego.

More than 4,600 volunteers took part in the search. They used horses, ATVs and dogs.
