The candidates for the Hobey Baker Award have been whittled to 10, including two Minnesotans.

They are Yale goalie Alex Lyon and St. Cloud State defenseman Ethan Prow, who played high school hockey for Lake of the Woods in Baudette and Sauk Rapids, respectively.

The other contenders are the three players on Michigan's top line, J.T. Compher, Kyle Connor and Tyler Motte, and four other forwards, Zac Lynch of Robert Morris; Alex Petan of Michigan Tech; Andrew Poturalski of New Hampshire, and Jimmy Vesey of Harvard, and goalie Thatcher Demko of Boston College.

• Lyon and Demko are also finalists for the Mike Richter Award, given to the nation's top goalie, along with Charlie Lindgren of St. Cloud State, Cam Johnson of North Dakota and Kevin Boyle of Massachusetts-Lowell.

5 Gophers at NCAAs

Five Gophers will compete in the NCAA wrestling championships starting Thursday at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Junior Brett Pfarr is the seeded third at 197 pounds, junior Michael Kroells ninth at heavyweight and freshman Tommy Thorn 11th at 141. Nick Wanzek is unseeded at 174 as is Jake Short at 149. Both are sophomores.

• St. Thomas junior Emma Paulson of Wayzata won the 50-yard freestyle on Day 1 of the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships in Greensboro, N.C. She is the first St. Thomas national champion in the 33-year history of the women's program. Her time was 22.77 seconds in both the prelims and finals.

• The No. 22 Gophers softball team edged No. 13 Oklahoma 12-10 in eight innings. Minnesota scored four runs in the top of the eighth, with the two eventual winning runs scoring on Maddie Houlihan's two-run single. She hit a three-run homer in the second inning.

• The Gophers beat host Seattle 12-2 in baseball as catcher Austin Athmann went 5-for-5.

• The women's alpine and Nordic ski teams at St. Olaf won the President's Cup in the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Nationals last weekend. The cup is given to the team with the fastest combined times in giant slalom and slalom (alpine) and the 7.5K and 1.5K classic sprint (Nordic).

• Columbus State beat Dakota County Tech 77-64 in the consolation bracket of NJCAA Division II men's basketball tournament in Danville, Ill. Jerome Dixon scored 17 points to lead Dakota County Tech (20-12).

• Northwestern (Roseville) defeated Emmanuel (Ga.) 61-57 in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association women's basketball tournament in Winona Lake, Ind. Amy Berglund scored 17 points and Regan Cooper 15 points to pace the Eagles (23-6).

• Damion Lowe scored on a header as visiting Minnesota United tied Cruz Azul Reserves 1-1 in exhibition soccer.
