Fall season matters: The North American Soccer League changed its postseason format for this season. The regular season was divided into spring and fall round-robins with the winners of each meeting in November for the Soccer Bowl trophy.

Rematch on tap: United's opponent, Atlanta, won the spring season with a 6-3-3 record, aided by a victory over the local team on July 4 in Blaine. The Silverbacks will be the host of November's championship game. Should they also win the fall season, their opponent in the championship will be the team with the second-best record for the full year.
