Gov. Mark Dayton will soon decide whether Minnesotans can purchase and use more powerful fireworks.

The Senate on Tuesday gave final approval to the bill and the amendments that were added on Monday in the House. That means the bill goes to Dayton, who has heard from both sides in the debate but has not said which way he is leaning.

Minnesota currently allows smaller, ground-based fireworks such as sparklers, snakes and cones. The bill would allow the full range of consumer fireworks, including firecrackers and more powerful aerial rockets.

The amendments limited the time period that the fireworks can be used, from June 1 to July 7, and allowed some regulation of the activity by local governments. Both changes were designed to meet the concerns of opponents, including fire departments and emergency rooms.

Sen. Mike Jungbauer, R-East Bethel, sponsored the bill in the Senate. It was given final approval on a 48-17 vote.
