The Gophers women's and men's gymnastics teams both were one spot short of qualifying for the final round of team competition in NCAA meet in Los Angeles and University Park, Pa., respectively.
The women's team was fourth in the first semifinal at Pauley Pavilion with a score of 196.375, finishing behind Florida, Louisiana State and Georgia.
Lindsay Mable of the Gophers scored a 9.900 in floor exercise to tie for first place. She also tied for fourth in vault with the same score. Hanna Nordquist's 9.900 tied for second place on the balance beam. Both will compete in Sunday's individual finals.
The men's team finished fourth out of six teams in the first session of qualifying with a score of 424.700. The top three teams — Michigan, Oklahoma and Illinois — advanced. The Gophers' best finish was second in the parallel bars.
Ellis Mannon won the pommel horse with a score of 15.250, but the team finished sixth. Mannon was among seven Gophers advancing to the individual finals on Sunday.
U teams snowed out
The Gophers' three-game softball series with Michigan State this weekend, starting Friday, was canceled because of poor field conditions at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium after the recent snowstorm. Those games will probably not be rescheduled.
In baseball, the Gophers' Friday game with the Spartans at Siebert Field has been postponed. A decision has not been made on games at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The new ballfield has artificial turf and drains well, so there is some hope of playing.
• No. 14-rated Nebraska beat the Gophers women's tennis team 6-1 at the Baseline Tennis Center. Jessika Mozia got the only point for the Gophers (9-13, 3-7), winning 1-6, 6-3 (10-6) at No. 4 singles. She and Alexa Palen also won at third doubles, but the Cornhuskers (20-4, 9-1 Big Ten) got the doubles point by winning the other two matches.
• The Gophers men's team, behind three-set wins by Rok Bonin and Leandro Toledo, won at Nebraska 5-2.
