Minnesota Scene: No. 2 Gophers to play Indiana in volleyball

The Gophers volleyball team, ranked No. 2 in the nation, will play at Indiana at 6 p.m. Friday.

Minnesota is 10-1 overall, 2-0 in Big Ten play and 5-1 in road matches. The Gophers rank seventh nationally in blocks per set, averaging 3.10. Paige and Hannah Tapp and Molly Lohman all average just over one block per set.

The Hoosiers (12-3, 1-1) are led by Allison Hammond, who averages 4.1 kills per set. They average 2.0 aces per set, sixth nationally.

Tennis Hall awaits two

Edina girls' tennis coach Steve Paulsen and St. James boys' and girls' tennis coach Les Zellman will be inducted into the Minnesota State High School Tennis Coaches Association's Hall of Fame on Oct. 24 at Earl Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center during the girls' tennis state tournament banquet.

Paulsen has coached the Hornets girls since 1992. Those teams have won 20 state titles, including the past 19.

He also was the boys' tennis coach at Edina from 1988-92, winning three state titles, and at Eastview from 2001-04.

Zellman has coached the boys' tennis team at St. James since 1980 and the girls' team since 1984. He has had 13 state tournament teams and has over 900 career victories.

Two Loons get call-ups

United defender Damion Lowe and goalkeeper Steward Ceus were called up by Jamaica and Haiti, respectively, for qualifying matches for the 2017 Caribbean Cup.
