Longtime Mounds View football coach Jim Galvin was named the school's activities director on Thursday.

Galvin, who led the Mustangs program for 16 seasons, replaces Bob Madison, who left to become a Minnesota State High School League associate director.

Galvin, a 26-year teacher and coach with Mounds View Public Schools, will vacate his most recent positions as football coach and physical education teacher.

The Minnesota State Mankato softball coaches were named the NFCA's Division II staff of the year. Lori Meyer and her assistants, Kristle Wolcott and Sammie Hildreth, led the Mavericks to a national title and a 64-7 record. MSU Mankato set five single-season records, including wins (64), runs scored (438) and hits (658).

• St. Michael-Albertville's Anna Keefer and North St. Paul's Jake Kubiatowicz were named the Gatorade's girls' and boys' track and field athletes of the year in Minnesota. Keefer won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump in the Class 2A state meet. She has signed with North Carolina. Kubiatowicz won the discus and placed second in the shot put in the same meet. He will attend Penn.

• Amanda Anderson, who recently won her second state championship in discus for St. Francis High School, finished seventh in the U.S. Track and Field Championships junior division in Sacramento, Calif., with a throw of 163 feet, 7 inches.

• St. John's wrestling coach Tony Willaert is leaving after three seasons to lead the program at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.

• Dave Kivett was named the softball coach at Minot State. He was the softball coach at Yucaipa (Calif.) High School the past 12 years.

• The St. Paul Saints signed Brandon Peterson, 25, a former Twins prospect and star pitcher at Burnsville High School. He was 0-1 with a 3.54 ERA in 12 relief appearances this season at Mobile, a Los Angeles Angels Class AA affiliate.
