Arizona State's Maggie Ewen, a senior from St. Francis, won the women's shot put on Friday in the NCAA Division I indoor track and field championships in College Station, Texas. Her throw of 60 feet, 8 inches was almost 2 feet more than the runner-up.

Gophers junior Kiley Sabin placed fifth (56-3¾).

Huskies close second

Four of St. Cloud State's 10 qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, won twice on the first day to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

Those wrestlers are Jarred Oftedahl at 141, James Pleski at 149, Larry Bomstad at 157 and Vince Dietz at 197. SCSU is second in the team race with 46.5 points, two behind Notre Dame of Ohio.

Four Auggies in semis

Four of Augsburg's eight wrestlers in the NCAA Division III Championships in Cleveland won their opening and quarterfinal matches.

Advancing were Sam Bennyhoff at 133 pounds, Alex Wilson at 149, Ryan Epps at 157, Lucas Jeske at 165. Jeske, seeded second, won on two falls. In the team standings, the Auggies were in second place with 44.5 points, 32 behind Wartburg (Iowa).

U baseball loses

The Gophers baseball team lost 7-3 to Creighton in the first game of a weekend series at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Losing pitcher Reggie Meyer gave up eight hits and all seven runs in 6⅔ innings for Minnesota (10-5). Jordan Kozicky was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Gophers, Terrin Vavra 3-for-4 with one RBI.

• No. 14 Arizona State shut out the Gophers softball team 6-0 in Tempe, Ariz. Giselle Juarez of the Sun Devils (19-2) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13. Minnesota fell to 12-8.

• Senior Brian Huber of Minnesota State Moorhead placed third in the long jump (25-2¾) at the Division II indoor track and field championships in Pittsburg, Kan. In the women's meet, senior Alexis Zeis of Mary won the 5,000-meter run (16:23.54) and Kimberly Peterson of Sioux Falls was second in the pole vault (13-6¼).

• Sophomore Tyler Radtke of St. Olaf won the 15k classic ski race at the USCSA Nationals in Lake Placid, N.Y., in 50 minutes, 28.40 seconds.
