Minnesota Scene: Luverne hockey star Jaxon Nelson to play in USHL next season

March 31, 2016 at 11:42AM

Sophomore forward Jaxon Nelson of Luverne signed a tender to play with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the U.S. Hockey League on Wednesday, his 16th birthday.

Nelson, who has verbally committed to the Gophers, had 70 goals and 43 assists for a state-best 113 points in 25 games this season.

"This is a great opportunity for me to not only develop as a player," the 6-2, 192-pound Nelson said, "but also represent the people of Luverne and show that we aren't just a farm town."

Lynx sign two

The Lynx signed guard Courtney Clements and forward Keisha Hampton. Clements played with the Los Angeles Sparks last season. Hampton, who played for DePaul, was drafted by the Seattle Storm in 2012. She missed that WNBA season because of a knee injury and was waived early the next.

• FSN will televise eight Lynx games this season, six at home and two on the road.

It’s unthinkable for players to give up on the season, but from another perspective, getting the best draft position is awfully tempting.
