Minnesota Scene: Hamline's Natalie Darwitz chosen D-III women's hockey coach of the year

Natalie Darwitz, who led Hamline's women's hockey team to its best season in 2017-18, was announced as the USCHO.com Division III women's coach of the year.

In Darwitz's third season, the Pipers went 22-5-3, won their first MIAC tournament postseason title and finished third in the national tournament.

Darwitz, a former U.S. Olympian and Gophers star, is the second Pipers coach ever to win a national Coach of the Year award. Doug Byrnes (gymnastics) received the honor last month, and Dick Tressel (football) was cited in 1984.

Hahn hired at SDSU

Damion Hahn, winner of multiple NCAA and Big Ten championships as a Gophers wrestler, was named the wrestling coach at South Dakota State.

Hahn spent the past 12 seasons as an assistant coach at Cornell.

• The Saints signed three pitchers with experience in major league farm systems — Tyler Warmoth and South St. Paul High products Ryan Boelter and Ryan Schlosser.

• The Gophers' scheduled home baseball opener against North Dakota State was postponed because of cold weather. Minnesota now is scheduled to open its Siebert Field home schedule Wednesday against Augsburg.
