The Gophers' overwhelming softball sweep of Maryland over the weekend led to league honors for two players.

Maddie Houlihan received her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the season, and Sara Groenewegen landed her fifth Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award of the season, the conference announced Monday.

The Gophers swept Maryland in just 15 innings, outscoring the Terrapins 30-1. Houlihan went 6-for-7 with three home runs and a double. She drove in eight runs.

Houlihan last won the award on April 11 and continues to be a force in her first season, hitting .331 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI. She leads freshmen in batting average during conference play.

Groenewegen won the 11th Pitcher of the Week award of her career. She pitched nine innings over the weekend and didn't allow a hit, with a five-inning no-hitter Friday and four perfect innings Sunday. She finished with 18 strikeouts. She is 25-5 this season with a 1.87 ERA and 268 strikeouts.

U gymnasts honored

Senior Lindsay Mable was named the Gophers women's gymnastics MVP at a banquet Sunday.

Mable won 24 event titles and eight all-around titles during the season and was first-team All-America in vault, beam, floor and all-around. She was the Big Ten all-around champion.

Mable also won the Mariam Award, given by Gophers coaches to the gymnast they believe did the most to be her very best.

Junior Bailey Abernathy and sophomore Abby DeMuse were named the team's Most Improved Gymnasts.

Abernathy had an average score of 9.789 on the vault, third-highest among the Gophers.

DeMuse recovered from shoulder surgery and averaged 9.809 on floor, second-best on the team.
