Kaitlyn Long of the Gophers won the weight throw Friday at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational hosted by Iowa with a toss of 71 feet, 2½ inches.

Earlier this week, Long, a senior from Cottage Grove, Wis., was named the Big Ten's Field Athlete of the Week for a career-best throw of 74-7¼ against Wisconsin. It was the second-best throw in the nation going into this weekend and a program record.

Long joined the Gophers this school year after spending three seasons at Winona State, where she was a two-time NCAA Division II indoor national champion in the weight throw.

In other events, Karlie Place of the Gophers took second in the pole vault (13-1½) and Val Larson second in the 600 (1:32.65).

Hot hand wins game for Concordia

Anna Schmitt made a long three-pointer as time expired to give Concordia (St. Paul) a 97-94 overtime victory over visiting Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC women's basketball. She had a school-record 37 points.
