Former North Stars defenseman Gordie Roberts resigned as the Elk River/Zimmerman boys' hockey coach Monday. Roberts, who spent four seasons with the Elks, will take an assistant position at Maple Grove.

"I've enjoyed my time in Elk River and I'm looking forward to a similar position like [assistant coach] Rick Wilson of the Minnesota Wild," Roberts said. "Work with the defense and support [Maple Grove coach] Todd [Bergland]. Plus, it's a lot closer to my home. Easier commute to the rink."

Roberts went 76-31-2, losing the Class 2A, Section 7 championship game twice against Duluth East.
