Minnesota Monthly editor Andrew Putz is heading to Boston. The Stillwater native, who saw an increase in newsstand sales during his two-year stint, confirmed Monday that he will take over as editor of Boston magazine next month.

"Andy Putz is one of the best young editors in America," said Larry Platt, editorial director for Metrocorp, the owner of Boston magazine, who worked with Putz at Philadelphia magazine. "He can make Boston magazine a must-read that gets the town talking and gets certain movers and shakers shaking."

The position opened after the Boston monthly laid off six people, including Editor James Burnett.

Putz, 35, said the move is "bittersweet."

"It was great to come back home and the people are awesome here," he said. "I'm proud of what we've done. But the Boston job is one of the half-dozen jobs that would appeal to me at this point."

Putz said the Boston magazine has a circulation of around 115,000, about 45,000 more than Minnesota Monthly.

He said it was unclear who would be take his position in the Twin Cities. His last day at the magazine is expected to be July 17.
