A 5-year-old boy taken by his mother late Monday in violation of a court order has been returned "safe and sound," police said early Tuesday.

Latiena LaShaunne Shavell Smith, 24, took the boy, Azherian Smith, from his home about 2 p.m. Monday, fleeing in a vehicle driven by a friend, police said. They stressed that Smith had no legal right to take the boy, saying he is in the care of another.

"Minneapolis police are pleased to announce that the child ... has been turned over to Fourth Precinct officers late Monday night safe and sound," police spokesman John Elder wrote in a new release.

He added that the investigation remains active, but had no further details early Tuesday.
