Minneapolis officials pass clean air ordinance banning use of e-cigarettes in public places

MINNEAPOLIS — The use of electronic cigarettes has been banned in all indoor public places in Minneapolis.

The City Council voted anonymously Friday to pass the new clean indoor air ordinance. The move prohibits the smoking of e-cigarettes inside of restaurants, stores, bars and workplaces. But it doesn't affect sampling inside of tobacco and e-cigarette shops that restrict people under the age of 18 from entering.

Both side of the issue voiced their opinions at a November committee hearing. Opponents said e-cigarettes were an important tool to quit smoking, while supporters said the products bring potential health risks.

Minnesota recently enacted a law that bans vaping near schools, hospitals and public university campuses. Duluth, Bloomington and Edina have also banned the use of e-cigarettes in public places.
