Classy gesture Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo went to goalie coach Roland Melanson last week to make sure backup Cory Schneider got at least two more games so he could share in the William Jennings Trophy for lowest goals against. A goalie must play a minimum 25 games to win the award (i.e. Niklas Backstrom and Manny Fernandez with the Wild in 2007).
So Schneider started Saturday's season finale in Calgary and got into a game against Edmonton for 29 seconds two games before.
"I just wanted to make sure he had an opportunity to be part of it because Schneids is one of the main reasons we have a chance to win it," Luongo said.
Future uncertain for Parise Zach Parise's comeback from knee surgery after missing 65 games lasted one game. When his knee was sore after playing Montreal last week, the Devils shut him down.
"It's not what I had planned, but I definitely think it's the smart idea with us not going to the playoffs," said Parise, a restricted free agent this summer who has yet to have contract talks with New Jersey.
That puts his future in limbo, as is Marian Gaborik's in New York. Gaborik was benched in the third period in consecutive games last week and is chained in coach John Tortorella doghouse.
With many free agents to re-sign in New York, Gaborik is expected to be shopped this summer.
