The Vikings on Monday announced that Pat Shurmur would coach their tight ends in 2016, not be a co-coordinator or special consultant. But there remains suspicion among media and fans about what exactly the former Browns coach and Eagles offensive coordinator will be doing here.
Tuesday, while scouting college prospects at the Senior Bowl, coach Mike Zimmer made his first public comments about the hire. Yes, Shurmur will be a position coach. But he will have some input into what the Vikings will do offensively — just like every other position coach.
"We're not really into titles," Zimmer told Scout.com. "We just want guys that want to work and guys that want to be there. Pat was excited to be there. I think he was excited with the guys offensively to work with in [Kyle] Rudolph and also the team."
Shurmur spent a decade in Philadelphia working for Andy Reid, a proponent of the quick-hitting West Coast offense. And in his second stint in Philly the past three seasons, he worked for Chip Kelly, who utilized a hyper no-huddle offense and at times zone-read elements.
