Matt Samuel, a patent lawyer and partner in the national law firm Fish & Richardson, announced last week that he will challenge Rep. Ron Erhardt for the DFL endorsement in the Edina district.

Samuel said in a statement that he will focus on education, the economy and the environment. He and his wife have lived in Edina since 2007 and have three children.

Heather Edelson, a stay-at-home-mom and community activist, has also announced a challenge to Erhardt.

On the Republican side, Dario Anselmo, who lost narrowly to Erhardt in 2014, is running again.

Erhard, in his 11th term, is a former Republican. The DFL will need to hold the Erhadt seat if they are to win back the House majority they lost in 2014 when Republicans flipped 11 seats to take the Speaker's gavel.
