On Friday night, writers Freya Manfred and Kao Kalia Yang will read at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts in Fridley.

Yang is the author of "The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir," published in 2005 by Coffee House Press, and "The Song Poet," published this year by Metropolitan Books. "The Latehomecomer" won two Minnesota Book Awards and has been widely chosen as a community reads title. "The Song Poet" is the story of her father's life in Laos, and of the Yang family's life as refugees in St. Paul.

Manfred is the author of eight collections of poetry, including "Swimming With a Hundred-Year-Old Snapping Turtle," and two memoirs, including "Raising Twins," recently published by Nodin Press. Manfred comes from a writing family--her father, Frederick Manfred, was the author of more than 20 novels, including "Lord Grizzly." And her brother, Frederick Manfred Jr., was a journalist, poet and playwright. He died in June from complications from kidney disease. Freya Manfred said she will read for her brother on Friday night.

The readings will begin at 7:30 p.m. Banfill-Locke is at 6666 E. River Road.
