A 13-year-old boy was shot in the head late Monday near the Little Earth American Indian community in south Minneapolis and was taken to a hospital critical condition, police said.

An officer working off duty heard shots around 10:50 p.m. in the area of E.M. Stately Street and Cedar Avenue S. Shortly after, somebody called 911 to report a shooting in the 2400 block of Ogema Place, said police spokesman Corey Schmidt.

Officers found the victim lying in a yard with a gunshot wound on the right side of his head. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, according to a police report, which said that he was "conscious and breathing."

No one had been arrested as of Tuesday morning.

Police had no information on suspects, but investigators and the police department's crime lab were on the scene talking with people, Schmidt said.
