A Minneapolis man pleaded guilty Thursday to a drive-by shooting that left a 19-year-old bicyclist dead.

Marcel Farr, 19, faces more than 30 years for second-degree murder and assault in the death of Tabyis Paskins, according to the Hennepin County attorney's office. Farr was about to stand trial on first-degree murder charges when the plea deal was struck.

According to the charges: Paskins and a friend were riding their bikes on an August 2016 weekday morning when they were approached by a group that included Farr, who yelled out to Paskins' friend. Paskins and his friend ignored them and kept pedaling. Farr's group caught up with Paskins and his friend in a car. Farr then leaned out of a rear passenger window and called out to Paskins' friend, "Ain't you in the Pack?" The friend said he didn't do that anymore and Farr told him, "That's good, because I would have killed you." As the two began pedaling away, Paskins' friend saw Farr fire several shots near Logan Avenue.

Paskins said he was hit and went a little farther before collapsing. He later died at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

Farr was 17 at the time and certified as an adult.

"Mr. Farr will be sentenced to 30 years in prison, but his stupidity is hard to comprehend," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement. "First, there was no reason to hop in a car and chase down these young men. Second, after they exchanged some words, he could have just let the victims ride away. And finally, there was no reason for him to shoot a gun, firing four shots to scare them. Because once fired, bullets will hit something and on that day, it hit the innocent young bicyclist."
