A man jumped from a cliff into a lake on the Iron Range and drowned, authorities said Sunday.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday at a beach in Gilbert, about 25 miles east of Hibbing, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

The victim was identified as Jeremy Stevens, 41, of nearby Mountain Iron.

Stevens was with four other people at Gilbert Beach at the time he "intentionally jumped off one of the cliffs and [drowned] below in the lake," a Sheriff's Office statement read.

Responding agencies included the Gilbert police and fire departments, the Virginia Fire Department, the state Department of Natural Resources and the St. Louis County rescue squad.

In another incident less than five hours later and 45 miles to the south, a 21-year-old swimmer was jumping on an inflatable trampoline in a reservoir, went underwater and had to be pulled to shore, the Sheriff's Office said.

The rescue occurred about 10:45 p.m. along the northern edge of Island Lake Reservoir, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The swimmer, a 21-year-old man, was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation by others once he was brought to shore and before an air ambulance took him to a hospital in Duluth.

There was no immediate word on the man's condition. His identity has yet to be released.
