A 30-year-old old man is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot early Thursday by his stepfather after breaking into the older man's home in Rutledge, Minn., authorities said Thursday.

According to the Pine County Sheriff's Office, deputies arrived at the home just after midnight Thursday in response to a report that a man was trying to break into the residence. As they were on their way, a report came in that a shot had been fired.

Upon arrival, deputies found the alleged intruder inside the house, suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. The person who fired the shot was the man's 59-year-old stepfather, authorities said.

The wounded man was taken by helicopter to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, where he was in critical condition Thursday.

The stepfather cooperated with authorities and was released pending further investigation, the Sheriff's Office said. Neither man's name has been released. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation.
