A 27-year-old felon in a car shot at a van while the two vehicles chased each other on a well-traveled southern Minnesota highway, authorities said.

No one was wounded in the late Wednesday morning incident on Hwy. 169 near Vernon Center, and one person has been arrested, according to the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's Office Capt. Paul Barta said Thursday that investigators "are not quite certain" what provoked the conflict but that everyone in the vehicles "knew one another."

"This is not a case of road rage," he said.

Witnesses told authorities that a van and car were "chasing one another" shortly before 11 a.m., a Sheriff's Office statement said. One witness said a passenger in the car shot at the van with a handgun.

Deputies quickly located and pulled over both vehicles, and the suspected gunman, from nearby Winnebago, was jailed on suspicion of second-degree assault with a firearm and illegal weapon possession.

The suspect's criminal history includes recent convictions for domestic assault, violation of orders for protection and driving after license revocation. He has yet to be charged in connection with the shooting.
