A three-vehicle crash initiated when a group home van ran a red light in Apple Valley has claimed the life of a resident riding in the home's vehicle, authorities said Wednesday.

James Sundboom, 66, of Apple Valley, died Monday afternoon at Hennepin County Medical Center, according to the medical examiner's office.

Sundboom was among seven people who were hospitalized following the wreck on the afternoon of April 6 at Garden View Drive and McAndrews Road, police said.

Six of those hurt were in a minivan: four residents of the nearby group home, the van's driver and an attendant, said Police Capt. Michael Marben. All were properly belted into their seats.

There was no immediate word on the conditions of the others hurt in the crash a few blocks north of Sundboom's home, although police and the group home said there have been no other fatalities.

Amanda Schlachter, of Apple Valley, was driving the home's van south on Garden View, went through the red light and was struck by an SUV heading west on McAndrews, Marben said. The impact sent the van into another van that was stopped at the intersection.

Police were waiting for the completion of the State Patrol crash investigation before deciding whether to cite Schlachter, the captain said.

The group home is owned by Thomas Allen Inc. of West St. Paul, which provides services to people with developmental disabilities.
