A 64-year-old man arrested immediately after a fatal stabbing in southeast Minneapolis has been released from jail as police continue to investigate the death, authorities said Sunday.

Police were sent to the Como neighborhood about 12:45 a.m. Saturday after a call for help from a neighbor. They found one man dead next to a knife at a duplex in the 1100 block of 13th Avenue SE.

The medical examiner will release the official cause of death.

A man who lives 1.5 miles directly east of the scene in Lauderdale was immediately arrested at the duplex, but he was released from jail shortly after 4 p.m. that same day without being charged.

Police spokesman John Elder said officers encountered the man, who was also injured, and he was "vigorously combative to police."
