The new attorney for "Making a Murderer" subject Steven Avery says that she's identified multiple suspects in the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.

In an in-depth profile published by Newsweek on Tuesday, Kathleen Zellner said that she has found "a couple" of suspects, both men who knew Halbach.

"We have a couple," Zellner, who specializes in wrongful convictions, said. "I'd say there's one, leading the pack by a lot. But I don't want to scare him off, I don't want him to run."

Zellner also said that police and Avery's defense team didn't adequately investigate Halbach's life. While Zellner noted that Halbach was a very nice person, she added that "women who have bad judgment about men are murdered."

Wisconsin resident Avery is currently serving life in prison for Halbach's murder. After the release of the Netflix documentary "Making a Murderer" in December, many viewers came to the conclusion that Avery was wrongfully convicted of the crime.

In addition to planning new forensic tests and finding leads to pursue, Zellner told Newsweek that she will argue for Avery's freedom because he suffered from ineffective counsel. Zellner believes that defense attorneys Dean Strang and Jerry Buting botched the defense by failing to argue that Halbach's cell-phone records indicate that the photographer left Avery's property alive.

Previously, Zellner has said that she will use "advanced luminol testing to exonerate Avery," referring to testing that's used to detect blood in large areas that can't be seen during visual examination.
