My first response to the shocking front-page photo of a grinning teen charged with murdering two people in Iowa was what irresponsible, sensational journalism this is. But after reading about the remorseless young man (described by a neighbor as a normal teen) my thoughts were far different. We need to see this face and think about it. What causes the growing violence that permeates our culture? What can possibly cause such a "typical" teenager to grow into a monster? It wasn't poverty, lack of a home or education. Is it a steady diet of filmed violence or video games that train to kill? Boredom? Bullying? Too much, or too little, discipline? Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it may be the absence of responsible villages that helps to create aberrations. As grandparents, we recently attended an inspiring high school musical and were thrilled to see so many fine, creative, hardworking, smart, confident young people involved. We know that is not unique. What causes that laudable phenomenon? What creates its frightening opposite? What can be done about it? As a society, we need to give that deep, productive thought.LOIS HALL, EDEN PRAIRIE
