Unfortunately, the person who was not invited to the White House last week was the lady who reported the possible break-in of Henry Louis Gates' house in Cambridge, Mass. Everyone involved in this story has ignored the fact that Lucia Whalen was acting as a good Samaritan by reporting a possible break-in. The facts show that she was not racially biased when she made the report, she simply reported what she saw. We should all thank her for helping to watch over the neighborhood in which she works. The president should have invited Whalen to the White House along with Gates and Sgt. James Crowley, and Gates should have thanked her for reporting a possible break-in as well as the police. Gates should have simply said thank you for your concern and response and let it go. It seems everything has to be racially motivated. Enough is enough! If any kind of recognition is deserved for this fiasco, it should be a civic award to Lucia Whalen. DOUG KURKOWSKI, SHOREWOOD
