The front-page story "Double Jeopardy" (July 19) shed much-needed light on the struggles of so many families when faced with a cancer diagnosis, especially in these tough economic times. Readers may be shocked to know that between 30 to 50 percent of cancer patients fall below the poverty line during cancer treatment. At Angel Foundation, we see patients every day who are facing tough choices-- deciding between buying their medicine or making their mortgage payments. As noted in the article, Angel Foundation does follow set income guidelines in granting financial aid for such needs as mortgage and rent payments, food, transportation and utility costs. We do our utmost to help those in need. Sadly, the need for this support is widening to higher income levels and quickly outpacing available resources, given today's economic realities. In 2008 alone, thanks to individual and corporate donors, we provided a 50 percent increase over the year before in financial assistance to adult cancer patients. This year, we are projecting an increase of 22 percent over last year. While this is encouraging, we are still in need of additional resources to extend our reach to all who request assistance, so those like Mike and Linda Harris need not worry about making ends meet while fighting for their lives. We would like to take this opportunity to ask readers to help contribute to our mission. Visit mnangel.org or call 612-627-9000 to learn how you can help.
