I had an experience last summer that speaks to the frustration many of us have with bicycles on the streets of Minneapolis. I was driving along E. 42nd Street during rush hour when I noted this incident. The bicyclist was less than a half-block ahead of me when I saw him swerve to avoid a car backing out of a driveway. Slowed down by the incident, the biker took the time to toss a couple of epithets at the driver. Then barely a half-block later he rode through a red light at Portland Avenue.

As a casual observer, I had sympathy for the biker as he acted to avoid a collision with the car as it backed out of the driveway. As a human being, I felt a bit bad for that driver as he got lambasted by language not fit to print on this page. As a driver, I admit to being ticked off that the bicyclist was able to ride through the same red light I had to wait for.

So who's right and who's wrong? You be the judge.
