Tree stumps and damaged sidewalks left in the wake of late June's storms will be removed and repaired starting this week.

The Minneapolis Park Board said the stumps from the park and boulevard trees will be removed.

Next, Public Works crews will repair the sidewalks and curbs damaged by the trees and stumps. Residents will not be charged.

About 3,000 trees were toppled during the storm. The Park Board said crews hauled more than 2,300 semi truckloads of tree debris from Minneapolis between June 22 and the end of July.

The Park Board warned that some streets might need to close while the stumps are removed because large machinery is used when the work is being done.

It will take an estimated four weeks to remove all the tipped stumps. The city's goal is to have all sidewalk and curb repairs completed by Nov. 1.

University of Minnesota researchers are looking at why so many trees were damaged by the storm.
