Photography Appropriations

Closes Sunday: Minneapolis-based photographer Peter Zarnoti has a great eye for Old Master art and beautiful women. Recently he has paired them in colorful images in which contemporary models imitate the poses of the masters. Equal parts homage and parody, his photos give a sly wink to art history while eliciting wide smiles from most viewers. Whistler's dour mother definitely would not approve of the bare naked babe so coyly aping her "Arrangement in Grey and Black," but the photo is irresistible. Zarnoti's "Lady of the Prairie," shown here, is a more modest gal. Paintings by Botticelli, Ingres, Delacroix, Frida Kahlo, the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood and a lot of American pinup talents are affectionately skewered by Zarnoti in the 30-some photos featured in "Appropriations." Even when it's not in good taste, it's all very good fun. Stop by before it closes, all too soon. (11 a.m.-6 p.m. Fri., noon-5 p.m. Sun. Free. Closed July 4. Douglas Flanders & Associates, 818 W. Lake St., Mpls. 612-791-1285, www.flandersart.com.)
