It was a one-and-done run in the Class 4A girls' basketball tournament last week for Lakeville North. The unseeded Panthers drew the short straw, going up against eventual champion Hopkins in the opening round. Lakeville North trailed by five at the half, but Hopkins revved the engines to open the second and won 51-29.

"There are only so many ways to attack them," Panthers coach Andy Berkvam said after his team committed 20 turnovers in the loss.

Caroline Sjoberg made the most of an otherwise down day for the Panthers.

Her three-pointer a minute into the second half against the Royals was her 47th of the season, tying a 13-year-old team record set by Lakeville's Marissa Lingenfelter.

Berkvam said he enjoyed Sjoberg's run at the record.

"She's the best pure shooter I've coached," he said.

A night later, fellow South Suburban Conference foe Eastview had similar bad luck with Hopkins. The Lightning, after advancing to the semifinals with a 13-point victory over St. Michael-Albertville, was stomped 55-31 by the Royals.

"We would have loved to execute better on offense, but that's just a testament to the kind of defense that team plays," Eastview coach Melissa Guebert said.

Eastview went nearly 11 minutes without a point in the semifinal loss and eventually placed fourth in the tournament.
