National parks are back in business

Yosemite National Park reopened to visitors Wednesday night with the end of the 16-day government shutdown, and other national parks and monuments followed suit on Thursday. "We're back from the #shutdown!" the Smithsonian Institution declared on Twitter, announcing that its 19 museums were reopening. The National Zoo reopened Friday. Earlier in the week, governors in at least five states reopened national parks such as the Grand Canyon and the Black Hills. Memorials, monuments and national parks became a political symbol as lawmakers ­bickered over blame.

T-Mobile caps charges for international calls

T-Mobile is eliminating fees for using data and texting services in more than 100 countries and capping charges for international voice calls.Starting Oct. 31, customers of T-Mobile's flagship Simple Choice plan won't have to worry about getting hit with so-called roaming fees if they fail to sign up for an international plan before traveling. Those fees can reach hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a trip, even to Canada or Mexico.

Museum-quality art enhances hotel suites

LeMeridien Chambers hotel in Minneapolis is scattered with artwork from the collection of owner Ralph Burnet, but it isn't the only place where you can see art before bedtime. Some luxury hotels are decorating suites with museum-quality works, according to the New York Times. In Rome, a suite in the Rome Cavalieri displays Andy Warhol's "Dollar Signs." The presidential suite at the Greenbrier in West Virginia has several paintings from such artists as Edward Beyer and Rembrandt Peale. The villa suites at the Saxon hotel in Johannesburg have pieces by top contemporary local artists, including a series on Nelson Mandela.
