Several New York news sources, including the Daily News and the Times, are reporting that Julie Taymor is out as director of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."

The musical, with music by U2's Bono and the Edge, is the most expensive in Broadway history, costing a reported $65 million to mount. It also has had the longest preview period of any show in Broadway history, now over 100 days and counting.

The delayed opening dates -- the show has announced five since it began previews in late November, only to postpone each -- have come because of technical issues with the show. Many critics went ahead and offered unflattering reviews of the show at the last delayed opening.

Despite, or perhaps because of, the injuries to its cast and its raft of creative issues, "Spider-Man" is a huge draw, with weekly grosses of over $1 million. Its take is second only to "Wicked."

But the show will now shut down for several weeks and re-tool under a new director, according to the reports.
