The Twins trimmed their camp roster some more by optioning outfielder Joe Benson and lefthander Pedro Hernandez to Class AAA Rochester and reassigning righthander Luis Perdomo to the minor league camp.

Benson came to camp with a chance to win the starting centerfielder's job but got off to a terrible start. Officials speculated at that time that Benson, who underwent surgeries on his wrist and knee last year, needed to get games under his belt in the minors after what turned out to be a tough 2012 season.

But Benson woke up over the past couple of weeks, taking much better at bats. It will be interesting to see if he can get off to a fast start at Rochester and remain high in the pecking order in case the Twins need an outfielder on the major league level.

Benson leaves camp with a .151 batting average but, trust me, was better hitter the past two weeks than he was the first two.

The Twins also reassigned third baseman Deibinson Romero to the minor league camp. Romero remains in the Dominican Republic because of visa issues. He met with officials there a few days ago but the Twins aren't giving any indication as to when he will be cleared to travel to the U.S.

There are now 38 players left in camp.

As expected, lefthander Scott Diamond and righthander Anthony Swarzak were placed on the 15-day disabled list. It's a matter of procedure, and both can come off Apr. 6. Diamond is aimng for a Apr. 12 return.
