Cars, clothing, household appliances and even furniture are all more cost-friendly at certain times of the year. Here's what's ideal to buy in January:

Gift cards: Shoppers planned to spend more on gift cards in 2010 than in 2009 -- $145.61 vs. $139.91. But not everybody loves the gift card they receive. At Plastic Jungle (www.plasticjungle.com), consumers can buy, sell and even trade gift cards at discounted prices. Because more people have gift cards this time of year, the selection and variety of retailers will be at an optimum level.

Video games: Those that did not sell in the holiday rush are available, often at a discounted price to make room for the new stuff. Buy now and save for birthdays or other special occasions.

Linens: In 1878, Philadelphia retailer John Wanamaker declared January "the annual White Sale." This tradition continues. Shop now for linens, pillows and towels. (Did you know that Bed Bath & Beyond will take expired BB&B coupons and accept a coupon for each item you buy?)

Furniture: Most new furniture lines are released in February and July, making now the time to snatch up deals on old inventory. Others will be buying furniture, too; keep an eye on the classifieds or Craigslist for used furniture.

Winter clothes: Retailers want to make room for spring's newest fashions. Look for great prices on winter coats, scarves, gloves and wool suits. Buy one size up for your children, so you are prepared for next year.

Grocery store: With consumers focused on New Year's resolutions, look for coupons and sales on diet frozen entrees, supplements and other diet-friendly food such as breakfast and snack bars. On the flip side, grocers also will have great deals on football-watching foods, including chips, soda, frozen appetizers and chicken wings.
